Behind the Work:
Breaking into union broadcast work at the CBS Broadcast Center was no small feat. I’d been persistently applying to join the IBEW union, staying on the radar for months—until the unexpected happened. When COVID-19 created a sudden shortage of engineers, I got the call and immediately stepped up. What followed was an accelerated, hands-on education in large-scale live production.

Starting as an A2, I quickly moved into A1 roles as fill-in opportunities opened due to quarantines and scheduling gaps. I adapted quickly to each production’s unique demands—from fine-tuning comms systems and managing RF coordination, to mixing and maintaining high-fidelity audio across control rooms and field setups.

As live shows and sports returned to full capacity, I continued freelancing on productions for:

  • CBS News

  • The Drew Barrymore Show

  • Serie A Soccer (Paramount+)

  • Nickelodeon

  • HBO and other Viacom/CBS properties

I coordinated large-scale RF and IFB systems, ensured uninterrupted communication between camera ops, producers, and anchors, and collaborated with cross-functional teams in fast-paced, live environments. These projects deepened my fluency in union broadcast workflows and refined my ability to thrive in high-pressure control room settings.
